Derived from the sanskrit root word “ YUJ” , yoga literally translated to be “ UNION” and the practicing yogis while possessing one final aim to completely unite their individual self with the universal consciousness ( PARBRAHMA). As a historic discipline the story of yoga spans a time period of 5000 years as is evident from various textual and archaeological evidences. In the modern era yoga has been mainly attributed to various postures to twist , turn , stretch and orient the body in physically many ways making it an attraction at the physical level. While many intricate breathing techniques have also found their way popularly among enthusiasts and seekers alike while the profound science of this holy tradition of practice has more to do with unfolding the deep seated infinite potentials of human mind and soul.
Yoga in itself is a path of life on which a seeker (YOGI) opts to walk voluntarily in search of self realization and fundamental questions of the curious thought which again and again keep emerging in front of everyone of us. By adopting the path of either GYANA: yoga of knowledge , BHAKTI : yoga of devotion , KARMA : yoga of action , RAJA : yoga of self realization through mind.
While YOGA is a more universal term which has neither any beginning nor an end the practice of yoga which is both physically and mentally improvised includes physical processes and various techniques to cleanse and then prepare the body through various asanas or postures for the subtle processes of meditation and control over senses and ultimately self to then complete the journey of final union with the eternal cause, the almighty. Apart from this deeper goal yoga as a physical and mental routine is beneficial in various ways and has evolved as both a fitness routine as well as detoxification and mind relieving process with much popularization and study underway as its scope continues to expand on and on
